Wedding Photography Styles + How to Choose!

Weddings

December 18, 2018

Choosing a photographer can be scary and overwhelming.  Who do I choose? What style am I looking for? How do I find someone to produce images like the ones I have been dreaming of?  With so many Wedding Photography Styles, how do you ever decide?

Worry not my friend, I am here to give you some advice.

In a very, very broad sense – there are three main styles of photography.  Light + Airy, Moody + Emotional, Bright + Colorful. I chose these three because they are the most different from each other.  They can also tell you a lot about the photographer themselves. So let’s dive in with some examples, shall we…

Light + Airy

When you hire a photographer that shoots in this style, you are going for an almost ethereal feel to your portraits.  These images are full of light and movement and are really quite beautiful. Some of my favorite photographers that shoot in this style are Amy + Jordan Demos.

Moody + Emotional

When you work with a photographer that shoots in this style, you are going for the deeper colors and almost film look.  They often convey a lot of emotion and contain a lot of images where the subjects are in close contact. One of my favorite photographers that shoots in this style is Ashley Schulze.

Bright + Colorful

This is the style of yours truly!  I love the contrast and detail of colors against a gown.  I love shooting outdoors with lots of greenery and bright flowers.  I love to capture couples laughing and celebrating. Another photographer who shoots in this style is Katelyn James (my unofficial mentor).  You can view the full blog of this wedding here.

There are more than just three styles, but these three tend to be the most different from each other.  If you are looking for something specific, or have images on your Pinterest board – I suggest trying to find a photographer who produces that kind of work.  Finding someone who matches your style is going to produce the portraits you have been dreaming of.

I also have a quiz to help you nail down your style based on your personality!  I would love for you to take it!
